The SLE Program draws on the tradition of our previous Sustainable Living Facility (SLF) program, and aims to broaden the agenda to include sustainability action. This is a residential program for students committed to practicing a sustainable lifestyle, and become ecological stewards within the Ramapo College student community.<\/p>\n<div class=\"collapsableContent\" tabindex=\"0\"><div class=\"collapsableTitle\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-down fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-up fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span>Context<\/div><div class=\"c_content\">\n<p>\u2018Eco-dorms\u2019 or green residence facilities or sustainable living facilities \u2013 are innovative life style approaches for those of us passionate about sustainability practice, and committed to reducing our ecological footprints. This is a new movement springing up across college campuses to promote outreach and education on sustainability. They range from small (e.g. 36-occupant) green buildings with student programming, including seminars and organic gardens, where the focus truly is on \u2018living green\u2019 and infusing sustainability into the student lifestyle; to large (125-360 student) green buildings designed to save operating costs over conventionally constructed residences, but with the residents essentially oblivious to notions of sustainability. There are also campuses where \u2018green lifestyles\u2019 are being promoted in small \u2018green themed houses\u2019, with programming support, but without a green building. Additionally, campuses also lead Eco Rep programs, which are student-led programs to promote climate action and outreach on campus. This relatively new movement towards leadership and stewardship on environmental issues is a growing movement, adopted by at least sixty institutions nationwide.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"collapsableContent\" tabindex=\"0\"><div class=\"collapsableTitle\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-down fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-up fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span>Goals<\/div><div class=\"c_content\">\n<ol>\n<li>To promote sustainable living practices through conscious choices to reduce ecological footprint.<\/li>\n<li>To build a strong community for sustainability across the campus.<\/li>\n<li>To build awareness of the need for sustainable thinking amongst the RCNJ student body through peer education.<\/li>\n<li>To take a leadership role in sustainability action and outreach within the campus and across the surrounding community.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div id=\"tabs\"><a href=\"#\" title=\"View Eligibility Tab\" rel=\"t1626843525\" class=\"active\"><span>Eligibility<\/span><\/a><a href=\"#\" title=\"View Benefits Tab\" rel=\"t1626843526\"><span>Benefits<\/span><\/a><a href=\"#\" title=\"View Requirements Tab\" rel=\"t1626843527\"><span>Requirements<\/span><\/a><a href=\"#\" title=\"View Governance Tab\" rel=\"t1626843528\"><span>Governance<\/span><\/a><a href=\"#\" title=\"View Selection Process Tab\" rel=\"t1626843529\"><span>Selection Process<\/span><\/a><a href=\"#\" title=\"View Agreement Tab\" rel=\"t1626843530\"><span>Agreement<\/span><\/a><\/div><div id=\"tab-content\"><div class=\"wrapper\"><div id=\"t1626843525\" title=\"Eligibility\" class=\"content active\" tabindex=\"0\">\n<h4><span style=\"color: #800000;\">SLE Eligibility<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Students apply for the SLE through a separate application procedure in February. Some elements of the Housing Selection process are done separately;\n<ul>\n<li>A separate application process is required and certain criteria must be met. The application deadline is February 21, 2022<\/li>\n<li>The SLE Committee reviews applications.<\/li>\n<li>Please be aware that SLE selection is a competitive process and final selection will be based on your application material.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Open to sophomores through seniors, with placement based on earned credits as of Fall 2021.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><div id=\"t1626843526\" title=\"Benefits\" class=\"content\" tabindex=\"0\">\n<h4><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Residential Locations:<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Students in SLE program reside in the Village and in CPAs.\u00a0 Placement is based on earned credits, as of Fall 2021.<\/p>\n<p>This includes apartment-style living, where students are able to cook for themselves, and live with students who share similar interests. Additionally, SLE participants help maintain to the organic vegetable garden, located behind the Redwood CPA.<\/p>\n<p>Juniors and seniors are eligible to live in the Village, which is close to the Sharp Sustainability Education Center (SSEC). The CPA&#8217;s offers occupancy to sophomores through seniors.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Village has single rooms, while the CPAs consist of double rooms.<\/li>\n<li>The Village is separately metered for electricity.<\/li>\n<li>All the SLE facilities practice composting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Academic and Learning Opportunities:<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The program offers many opportunities to students to foster their interests in building a sustainable community;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Learn how to grow your own food<\/li>\n<li>Learn to compost<\/li>\n<li>Reduce your ecological footprint<\/li>\n<li>Earn service learning credits and build your resume<\/li>\n<li>Live with a great ecologically minded community, with many opportunities to hold community events.<\/li>\n<li>Build connections with local community networks such as MEVO and the NY-NJ Trail Conference.<\/li>\n<li>Become a community steward and learn effective leadership skills while leading sustainability campaigns on campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Benefits to Ramapo College:<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Green living&#8221; decreases operating costs (energy\/water savings; increased waste diversion, through recycling and composting, therefore decreased refuse)<\/li>\n<li>Student engagement in sustainability<\/li>\n<li>Culture-building<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><div id=\"t1626843527\" title=\"Requirements\" class=\"content\" tabindex=\"0\">\n<h4><span style=\"color: #800000;\">SLE Requirements<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong><u>Academic Requirement<\/u><\/strong>: SLE is a complete service learning program and hence, <strong>requires<\/strong> students to register in two <strong>1 unit Independent Study courses <\/strong>for service learning with SLE faculty.\u00a0 These will take the form of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Independent Study on Sustainable Living (Fall Semester).\u00a0 This section will focus on:\u00a0a Reading Seminar, community building, and reducing ecological footprint<\/li>\n<li>Independent Study on Eco-Stewardship (Spring Semester).\u00a0 This section will focus on building a project to raise awareness about ways of reducing our ecological impact<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong style=\"color: #2f2f2f;\"><u>Eco-Stewardship Requirement<\/u><\/strong><span style=\"color: #2f2f2f;\">: Students will commit to <strong>one hour of weekly meetings <\/strong>(on Wednesday evenings, from 5 to 6 pm, based on consensus), <\/span><strong style=\"color: #2f2f2f;\">40 hours of community service<\/strong><span style=\"color: #2f2f2f;\"> throughout the academic year, <strong>about 20 hours a semester. Ecological leadership work<\/strong> will involve engagement with RA and also student club leaders to promote campus sustainability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Service opportunities may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Help maintain the vegetable garden and grow your own food<\/li>\n<li>Help develop and maintain a student composting program on campus<\/li>\n<li>Explore ways to connect with the local farmers market<\/li>\n<li>Support the establishment of the Fair Trade Program on campus<\/li>\n<li>ResLife Recycling liaison to Student Recycling Crew (collect data on volume of recyclables, encourage compliance across Residences)<\/li>\n<li>Liaison with Ramapo Green, 1STEP, SGA Sustainability Committee, ResLife, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Students will also be expected to be attend <strong>sustainability events on campus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Sustainable Living Requirement<\/u><\/strong>: As SLE Program participants, students will be expected to take a leadership role<a href=\"https:\/\/ecochallenge.org\/how-it-works\/\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/a>as well as abide by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/ramapo-green\/sustainability-pledge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ramapo Green Sustainability Pledge<\/a>. This is geared toward inculcating a green life style and to encourage students to reduce their footprint on campus.<\/p>\n<p>Examples of actions which students are expected to undertake include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Grow your own food<\/li>\n<li>Make sustainable food choices, such as buying locally<\/li>\n<li>Compost your food scraps<\/li>\n<li>100% recycling compliance (paper, cardboard, metal, glass, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Improve indoor air quality and limit environmental degradation by using \u2018green\u2019 cleaning supplies<\/li>\n<li>Reduce personal carbon footprint\n<ul>\n<li>By taking fewer single-occupancy car trips \u2013 carpool; combine trips<\/li>\n<li>By using public transit<\/li>\n<li>By conserving energy (electricity, heat) and water<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><div id=\"t1626843528\" title=\"Governance\" class=\"content\" tabindex=\"0\">\n<h4><span style=\"color: #800000;\">SLE Governance<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Each SLE unit is overseen by a designated RA, who will assist in coordinating the program. The RA will also create programming events targeted to the SLE students.<\/li>\n<li>Each SLE cluster can have its own \u2018Residential Board,\u2019 with regular meetings to discuss any issues that arise, ideas that can be brought forward, etc. The ResBoard becomes the governing body for the SLE and becomes the core of the community.<\/li>\n<li>Facebook page \u2013 developed and maintained by members \u2013 with information on campus sustainability events, homemade green cleaning supplies; recipes; area vendors of local\/organic foods and farmers markets; tips for green living (in support of the \u2018Sustainable Living Agreement\u2019).<\/li>\n<li>The SLE program is overseen by a Committee, whose role includes the overall governance and budget for the program, and selection of students who apply to the SLEs.<\/li>\n<li>Each SLE cluster has a Residential Board made up from its residents, acting as a governing body for the SLE. The Residential Board Chair is the SLE Student Director.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><div id=\"t1626843529\" title=\"Selection Process\" class=\"content\" tabindex=\"0\">\n<h4><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Selection Criteria and Process<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Students will apply to the SLE program by February 21st, 2022.<\/li>\n<li>Applications will be reviewed by representatives from the SLE Committee.<\/li>\n<li>Students must submit the following information (in addition to the regular housing form):\n<ul>\n<li>Sustainability Resume: applicant\u2019s name, major, overview of Sustainability Actions on campus and off campus, future plans for sustainability involvement.<\/li>\n<li>Narrative: paragraph (500 words minimum) describing why the applicant wishes to participate in the SLE Program, and expressing their commitment to meet the goals to live sustainably for the entire academic year (see SLE Requirements).<\/li>\n<li>At least one letter of recommendation (e.g. from a faculty member) addressed to <a href=\"mailto:spadhy@ramapo.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Sangha Padhy<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>List of students they would like to have as room-mates<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Criteria for review will include the applicant\u2019s Resume and Narrative, plus:\n<ul>\n<li>Cumulative GPA 2.5 or higher\n<ul>\n<li>Students who are accepted for the SLEs, but whose cumulative GPA drops below 2.5 in May, may appeal to the selection committee for permission to enter the SLE program in September. The appeal should include documentation stating the student\u2019s plan for improving their GPA. Should the appeal be denied, that student\u2019s space will be filled from the SLE wait-list.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Judicial review by the Office of Student Conduct, to ensure no major judicial violations<\/li>\n<li>Academic review by Office of the Provost to ensure no academic integrity violations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><div id=\"t1626843530\" title=\"Agreement\" class=\"content\" tabindex=\"0\">\n<h4><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Sustainable Living Eco-Stewardship Agreement<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Students who are\u00a0participating in the SLE Program are expected to abide by all Office of Residence Life policies, procedures and housing requirements. For your reference, please refer to the Guide to Community Living and Student Handbook, which is listed on the\u00a0Residence Life Website.
