Currently, the Womens and Gender Studies minor requires two courses: SOSC280: Women in Contemporary society and SOSC223: Women Writers. Students then can take 3 electives from a list of approved courses. At least half of the courses the student takes for the minor cannot count towards the students major requirements. Faculty from diverse disciplines and three out of the five schools teach in this interdisciplinary minor, and they will continue to do so once revisions have been made. The Womens and Gender Studies convening group proposes the following changes to the minor: 1. Change the name to Womens, Gender, and Sexuality Studies 2. Remove SOSC 223: Women Writers as a required course and replace it with LITR312: Comparative Feminist Theories. NOTE: We are sending in a separate proposal to revise Comparative Feminist Theories, which includes changing the name to Feminist Theories. Thus, henceforth, we refer to the course as LITR312: Feminist Theories. 3. Allow students to take either SOSC280: Women in Contemporary Society OR PSYC235: Development of Sexual Identities: LGBT as the second required course. NOTE: A separate proposal is being submitted to revise the name for Development of Sexual Identities to Sexuality and Gender Identities: LGBTQA+. Thus, henceforth, we refer to the course as PSYC235: Sexuality and Gender Identities. NOTE: We will retain 3 electives as the other requirements for the minor. Rationale: The name change and changing the requirements to include Feminist Theories is consistent with programs at equivalent institutions. Richard Stockton, Montclair State, and Rider University have named their minor, Womens, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. Additionally, Richard Stockton, Montclair State, Seton Hall, and William Paterson all require a Feminist Theory class for the minor. For a full list of program information at equivalent institutions, please see page 3. Assessment data suggest that minors need to increase their knowledge of feminist theories. During the fall 2012-spring 2013 AY, we assessed the program learning outcome, Students will be able to describe and distinguish a broad range of feminist theories and practices both nationally and internationally. Our achievement target was only met for one of our two measures. The addition of this feminist theory class functions to close the loop regarding meeting program goals and outcomes. Additionally, current minors and students interested in the minor have expressed the need for these changes to the minor. According to a survey of students from fall 2015, as well as informal conversations and interviews with minors, students expressed that, as a liberal arts college, Ramapo College needs to offer a minor that includes sexuality studies. Furthermore, students have consistently expressed that they are unable to sufficiently engage in advanced-level conversations about women, gender, and sexuality, because an upper-level class is not available to them. For a full report of the survey responses, please see page 3. In order to enhance the Sexualities component of the program, the Development of Sexual identities course will serve as another option for the second required course. Development of Sexual Identities provides feminist and queer theoretical approaches to understanding sexual identities; an interdisciplinary approach is used in this course. It is also offered least one time per year. Because psychology majors also take this course, we can confirm that it will continue to be offered once per year annually, as it has run at least once per year for more than 10 years. Additionally, to ensure that our Feminist Theories course can be regularly offered, we plan to submit it for consideration in the General Education Values and Ethics distribution category. Furthermore, the number of womens and gender studies minors suggest that the course is sustainable as an offering, as for the last 5 years we have had, on average, 18 Womens and Gender Studies minors. Thank you for the consideration of our proposal. We invited both individuals who are currently WAGE minors and those who are not. Fifteen out of the 22 WAGE minors participated in the survey (68% response rate). Twelve non-WAGE minors participated in the survey.
