  {"id":1321,"date":"2023-02-08T09:29:18","date_gmt":"2023-02-08T14:29:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/ccec\/?page_id=1321"},"modified":"2026-03-17T11:05:57","modified_gmt":"2026-03-17T15:05:57","slug":"humanitarian-aid","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/ccec\/home\/humanitarian-aid\/","title":{"rendered":"Humanitarian Aid"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Hurricane Melissa &#8211; Jamaica and Cuba<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"227\" data-end=\"541\">In late October 2025, Hurricane Melissa unleashed catastrophic destruction across parts of Jamaica and then eastern Cuba. Rapid intensification, warm sea-surface temperatures and slow storm motion combined to produce one of the most extreme events in recent Caribbean history.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"543\" data-end=\"1584\"><strong data-start=\"543\" data-end=\"554\">Jamaica<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"543\" data-end=\"1584\">On October 28, Melissa made landfall near the town of New Hope, in the parish of Westmoreland, as a Category 5\u2013level hurricane with sustained winds reaching up to 185 mph \u2014 making it the strongest storm ever recorded to strike Jamaica. The southern parish of St. Elizabeth was reported to be \u201cunderwater,\u201d experiencing massive flood-inundation, while more than 500,000 households lost power across the island.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"543\" data-end=\"1584\">Destruction included severely damaged hospitals, disrupted road networks and blast-force winds ripping off roofs. The Prime Minister declared the island a disaster zone and noted that although no confirmed fatalities had yet been announced at that time, \u201cwe are expecting that there would be some loss of life.\u201d Agriculture, infrastructure and coastal communities were hit extremely hard: access roads washed out, airports damaged, entire communities cut off.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1586\" data-end=\"2337\"><strong data-start=\"1586\" data-end=\"1594\">Cuba<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1586\" data-end=\"2337\">After tearing through Jamaica, Melissa struck eastern Cuba on October 29 as it weakened to a Category 3 hurricane with sustained winds of ~120 mph. Authorities in Cuba pre-emptively evacuated more than 735,000 people ahead of landfall, especially in vulnerable mountain-and-coastal areas such as near Guam\u00e1 and Santiago de Cuba.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1586\" data-end=\"2337\">Major power outages, flash-flooding and landslides were reported. The terrain of eastern Cuba \u2014 steep and prone to slope failures \u2014 made the storm\u2019s rainfall particularly dangerous. The strain on already constrained infrastructure, fuel and food supplies intensified the challenge of recovery.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2339\" data-end=\"2960\"><strong data-start=\"2339\" data-end=\"2360\">Relief &amp; Response<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"172\" data-end=\"317\">Local and international organizations are mobilizing to support communities in Jamaica and Cuba following the devastation of Hurricane Melissa:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"319\" data-end=\"759\"><strong data-start=\"319\" data-end=\"514\"><a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.redcross.org\/about-us\/news-and-events\/press-release\/2025\/red-cross-movement-responds-in-caribbean-.html?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"321\" data-end=\"512\">American Red Cross \u2014 Caribbean Hurricane Response<\/a><\/strong><br data-start=\"514\" data-end=\"517\" \/>Red Cross teams are providing emergency shelter, food, clean water, and medical assistance to families displaced by the storm. Volunteers are also helping to reconnect separated loved ones and distribute relief supplies across both islands.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"761\" data-end=\"1159\"><strong data-start=\"761\" data-end=\"959\"><a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wfp.org\/stories\/hurricane-melissa-wfp-hand-jamaica-responds-its-worst-storm-ever?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"763\" data-end=\"957\">World Food Programme (WFP) \u2014 Emergency Food Assistance for Jamaica and Cuba<\/a><\/strong><br data-start=\"959\" data-end=\"962\" \/>WFP is coordinating with local governments to deliver food parcels, fortified cereals, and nutritional supplements to the most affected regions, particularly in southern Jamaica and eastern Cuba.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1161\" data-end=\"1573\"><strong data-start=\"1161\" data-end=\"1358\"><a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.directrelief.org\/2025\/10\/direct-relief-scales-up-caribbean-support-as-hurricane-melissa-slams-jamaica\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"1163\" data-end=\"1356\">Direct Relief \u2014 Caribbean Emergency Medical Response<\/a><\/strong><br data-start=\"1358\" data-end=\"1361\" \/>Direct Relief has deployed emergency medical kits to hospitals and clinics, providing essential medications, wound care supplies, and portable power equipment to ensure continuity of care in damaged facilities.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1575\" data-end=\"1754\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Efforts continue as recovery teams work to restore infrastructure, provide humanitarian aid, and rebuild communities across Jamaica and Cuba in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa.<\/p>\n<h2>Israel and Gaza<\/h2>\n<p>More than 67,000 people have been killed in Gaza, with nearly 169,000 injured. Over 80% of the population has been displaced and Israeli restrictions and ongoing fighting have hindered efforts to bring in humanitarian aid, fueling widespread hunger.<\/p>\n<p>Israeli officials have reported at least 1400 soldiers have been killed during the ground invasion of Gaza.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Israel and Gaza Relief Efforts<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icrc.org\/en\/donate\/libya-emergency\">International Committee of the Red Cross<\/a> <\/strong>is an impartial, neutral, and independent organization whose exclusively humanitarian mission is to protect the lives and dignity of victims of armed conflict and other violence situations and to provide them with assistance.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/donate.doctorswithoutborders.org\"><strong>Doctors without Borders<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; Doctors Without Borders\/M\u00e9decins Sans Fronti\u00e8res (MSF) cares for people affected by conflict, disease outbreaks, natural and human-made disasters, and exclusion from health care in more than 70 countries.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.savethechildren.org\/us\/where-we-work\/west-bank-gaza\">Save the Children Fund<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; Save the Children is an international, NGO that was founded in the UK in 1919, with the goal of helping improve the lives of children worldwide. <span style=\"color: #2f2f2f\">The organization helps to raise money to improve children&#8217;s lives by creating better educational opportunities, better health care, and improved economic opportunities.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Ukraine<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Since February 2022, Ukraine has faced ongoing conflict following Russia&#8217;s full-scale invasion. The war has led to widespread devastation, including significant civilian casualties, destruction of infrastructure, and a humanitarian crisis affecting millions.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Humanitarian Relief and Aid<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The war in Ukraine has prompted a global response, with organizations working to address the immense humanitarian needs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/emergencies\/ukraine-emergency\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)<\/strong><\/a>: Provides shelter, food, and protection for millions of displaced Ukrainians.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.icrc.org\/en\/donate\/ukraine\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)<\/strong><\/a>: Assists with medical care, evacuation efforts, and the distribution of essential supplies.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.razomforukraine.org\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Razom for Ukraine<\/strong><\/a>: A Ukrainian-American nonprofit raising funds to deliver medical supplies, communication equipment, and humanitarian aid to those affected by the war.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As the conflict persists, the resilience of the Ukrainian people and the continued support of international communities remain critical in addressing the unfolding crisis.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"collapsableContent\" tabindex=\"0\"><div class=\"collapsableTitle\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-down fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-up fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span>Previous Events<\/div><div class=\"c_content\">\n<div>\n<h4>Afghanistan<\/h4>\n<p>On Saturday, October 7th, 2023 a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck 25 miles west of Herat city in the western Herat province \u2013 the third largest in Afghanistan. The Afghani Authorities report that over 2,400 people died.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>California<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Throughout late December 2024 and early January 2025, wildfires have devastated parts of Los Angeles, driven by prolonged drought, dry vegetation, and intense Santa Ana winds. Many areas have experienced extensive damage, with thousands forced to evacuate as the fires spread rapidly across the region.<\/p>\n<h4>Morocco<\/h4>\n<p>On September 9th, 2023 a 6.8 magnitude earthquake hit Morocco. The epicenter was in the High Atlas Mountains near an area that\u2019s home to some 840,000 people. Roads became blocked with debris and the mountainous terrain hindered rescuers. Reports from Moroccan Authorities state at least 2,900 were killed during this disaster.<\/p>\n<h4>Libya<\/h4>\n<p>Parts of eastern Libya were hit by devastating flooding after storm Daniel hit the country\u2019s Mediterranean coast on September 10th, 2023. As a result of this storm, two dams in the port city of Derna collapsed causing more destruction. There were reports of over 11,000 deaths and more than 10,000 still missing.<\/p>\n<h4>Florida<\/h4>\n<p>Hurricane Idalia made landfall near Keaton Beach in late August 2023 as a high-end Category 3 hurricane with maximum sustained winds near 125 mph. The system remained a hurricane as it crossed into Georgia with top winds of 90 mph.<\/p>\n<p>The destructive storm caused flooding, loss of power, the snapping of trees, and general destruction in it&#8217;s wake.<\/p>\n<h4>Hawaii<\/h4>\n<p>On August 8th, 2023 the State of Hawaii declared a state of emergency as a series of wildfires broke out. These wildfires primarily affected Maui and caused the death of nearly 115 people.<\/p>\n<h4>Turkey and Syria<\/h4>\n<p>More than 53,000 people were killed and more than 77,000 were injured in Turkey and Syria when devastating earthquakes hit in February 2023.<\/p>\n<h4>New Jersey<\/h4>\n<p>Throughout the end of October and early November, wildfires have blazed through New Jersey. Dry conditions led to nearly constant Red Flag warnings. Most of the state did not receive any substantial amount of rain throughout the two months.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Craigmeur Lookout Wildfire<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Approximately 200 acres of land burned in a fire at the Craigmeur Recreation Complex in Rockaway, New Jersey.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Cannonball 3 Wildfire<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A 181-acre fire ripped through through the former DuPont-Chemours plant and other surrounding areas in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Englewood Cliffs Wildfire\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nearly 40 acres were burned in an area of the Palisades Interstate Parkway in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Jennings Creek Wildfire<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nearly 5,000 acres of area have burned in this New York-New Jersey fire. The fire has impacted Orange County New, York and the towns of Ringwood and West Milford, New Jersey. The\u00a0fire claimed the life of an 18-year-old volunteer firefighter, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/local\/rockland\/spring-valley\/2024\/11\/11\/dariel-vasquez-2024-ramapo-high-grad-ny-state-parks-aid-killed-battling-wildfire\/76193017007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dariel Vasquez<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\"><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Spain<\/h4>\n<p>Eastern Spain experienced heavy rainfall during an October 29th, 2024 storm that led to intense flooding in the Eastern region of Valencia and other parts of the country. The flash flooding triggered mudslides and landslides that further added to destruction throughout the country.<\/p>\n<h4>Hurricane Milton &#8211; Florida<\/h4>\n<p>Hurricane Milton made landfall near Siesta Key, Florida on October 9th, 2024 as a powerful Category 3 hurricane. Milton&#8217;s landfall unleashed deadly tornadoes across Florida and Georgia; hundreds of miles from the eye of the storm.<\/p>\n<p>The costal town of St. Petersburg received nearly 16 inches of rain in a matter of hours, causing flooding. Wind gusts exceeded 100 mph (160 kph), causing great destruction to impacted areas.<\/p>\n<h4>Hurricane Helene &#8211; South Eastern and Appalachian United States<\/h4>\n<p>On Thursday, September 26th, Hurricane Helene landed in Florida\u2019s Big Bend region as a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 140 mph (225 kph).<\/p>\n<p>From there, Hurricane Helene moved through Georgia, the Carolinas, and Tennessee with torrential rains, sending creeks and rivers over their banks and straining dams.
